Magical Deathpair: A Darkly Enchanting Visual Novel

Magical Deathpair is a visual novel with a very distinctive art style and an interesting universe. Fans of dark VN’s or horror in general would be well-served by checking this title out. However, it’s worth noting that this is only the first chapter of the story, so don’t expect everything to wrap up conclusively.

BE AWARE THAT THERE ARE MOMENTS OF GORE IN THIS VN.

Graphically, this game was created with RPG Maker (a fact that the developer is very open about). This means that rather than looking at a static screen, you’re going to be physically walking and interacting with people and objects. The only real detailed art you’re going to see is in character portraits when you have a conversation, or in the CG’s that pop up from time to time. At all times, the designer’s artistic style is readily apparent, however, and it’s refreshingly consistent throughout the game. There’s definitely elements of graphic gore and violence, along with some sexual aspects that might make some people uncomfortable.

EVEN THE STANDARD GAMEPLAY LOOP OOZES CHARACTER.

The story itself is told in a very linear fashion and features limited opportunities to alter the plot itself, which is something I’d personally like to see more of, especially since the plot involves social deduction elements. (Think Mafia/Among Us/Werewolf/etc, if you’re unfamiliar with the term.) While I can understand the pitfalls and increased difficulty when you’re trying to incorporate even minor narrative branching, the game did tend to make me feel rather railroaded, as the only “alternate” paths end in your death. You basically have the answer handed directly to you, which is more than a little disappointing. However, the characters are quite interesting, though you rarely get more than a line or two of conversation from them outside of a handful of lore-important moments.

THE STYLIZED ARTWORK IN THE CG’S ABSOLUTELY ADDS A TON OF CHARACTER TO THE GAME.

Still, this game does exactly what it set out to do: it lays out a new universe, tells a grim story, and leaves the hook for the next chapter, and I don’t feel that my time was wasted, nor would your money be wasted. It may not be as feature-rich as larger budget or more established titles, but it also costs a fraction of the price of the big boys. I’m looking forward to see what’s coming in the future of this series.

The Chuck is a lifelong gamer who was born in Ohio, but now lives in much closer proximity to Mickey Mouse.

The Chuck has found his life to be a series of improbable and almost unbelievable events, starting when he was twenty and caught the bubonic plague from a prairie dog. He was as surprised as anyone when he found out that's something that can happen.

When he isn't gaming, The Chuck can be found enjoying baseball, (American) football, pro wrestling, and horror movies. He is most commonly seen in the company of one or more cats.

Reclusive by nature, The Chuck is (like most semi-feral creatures) reward-driven. Approach with caution and some form of treat.
