Digital Sky’s Mandate Order is set to launch in Steam Early Access on August 12, 2026, bringing a distinctly ancient Chinese flavor to the city-building and strategy genre. The game, priced at $19.99 with a 15% launch discount for the first two weeks, combines freeform city construction with large-scale real-time tactical warfare set during China’s Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods.

What sets Mandate Order apart from other city-builders is its integration of the Hundred Schools of Thought into gameplay. Players recruit retainers from historical philosophical traditionsu2014including Confucianism, Mohism, Legalism, and othersu2014and assign them to roles in governance, military command, diplomacy, and national policy development. A nine-grid policy system interacts with court debates, creating strategic depth that extends well beyond simple resource management.

The game asks players to build and manage a vulnerable frontier settlement, developing everything from farmland and workshops to warehouses and fortified walls. The city itself becomes the foundation of military power, as players must convert civilian workers into soldiers by outfitting them with weapons stored in armories. Every recruitment decision carries real consequencesu2014conscripted workers abandon their current jobs and leave behind any resources they were carrying.

Combat features line-drawing controls for deploying formations across large battlefields, enabling tactics like encirclement, breakthrough, and siege assault. A pseudo-physics knockback system aims to make ancient warfare feel tangible, while defensive architecture including walls, towers, catapults, and ballistae gives players meaningful choices in how they fortify their settlements.

Since its public demo ended in May, Digital Sky has overhauled several core systems based on player feedback. The tutorial has been restructured with separate lessons covering production, logistics, agriculture, and combat. Agriculture has been simplified to reduce micromanagement while providing clearer seasonal feedback. Invasion mechanics are now more flexible, allowing players to adjust pressure timing and frequency rather than facing rigid wave patterns.

The Early Access version also includes DLSS, FSR, and XeSS support, alongside stability and performance improvements for large settlements. Digital Sky estimates approximately 12 months of Early Access development, with plans for new maps, building upgrades, livestock systems, additional retainers, and expanded late-game content.

With nearly 100,000 Steam wishlist additions before launch and support for 12 languages, Mandate Order is arriving with considerable momentum. Steam players looking for a city-builder that blends historical Chinese philosophy with deep strategic warfare should keep this one on their radar.
