Twenty years after Swedish developer Nifflas first released the freeware platformer Knytt to a captivated internet audience, the beloved indie classic has officially returned on Steam. Knytt Classic, a pixel-perfect port crafted by Bit Kid (known for Chasm and WOLFHOUND), launched as a free title on Valve’s storefront, bringing the atmospheric adventure to modern hardware with a suite of thoughtful additions.
The original Knytt debuted in 2006 as a passion project built with the help of internet forum collaborators. Its gentle platforming, ambient synth soundtrack, and richly atmospheric alien landscapes quickly earned it a devoted following. Edge Magazine called it “pure platforming pleasure and a wonderfully soothing soundscape,” while IGN described it as “an extremely soothing and memorable ambient adventure.” The game spawned a series that continued with Knytt Stories in 2007 and Knytt Underground in 2012.
In Knytt Classic, players guide a small peaceful creature who has been abducted by aliens and stranded on a mysterious planet after a crash landing. The goal is to explore over 1,500 interconnected screens, gathering the scattered parts of your spaceship to find a way home. There are no enemies to fight and no complex puzzles to solve — just pure exploration through a beautifully designed alien world filled with curiosity and quiet wonder.
Bit Kid’s port adds full gamepad support and remappable controls, making the game fully playable on Steam Deck and other handheld PCs. For returning fans seeking a tougher challenge, three bonus modes have been included: UltraTough, a new hard mode designed by Bit Kid; Knytt XH, an extra-hard mod created by Baba Is You developer Hempuli; and Brutally Unfair Knytt, a remixed version of the world. Multiple aspect ratios and display effects, including retro CRT and handheld LCD filters, round out the package.
With achievements, hidden bonuses, and optional speedrun tracking, Knytt Classic offers a compelling reason to revisit one of indie gaming’s most charming early treasures — or to discover it for the first time. The game is available now on Steam, completely free.
