Escape From Playtime Turns Players Into Smiling Critters

The Playtime Co. factory has been quiet for too long, and Mob Entertainment is letting players back inside with a new twist. Escape From Playtime, a co-op survival horror adventure set in the Poppy Playtime universe, arrived in Steam Early Access on October 21, shortly after being announced at the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct.

The twist is who you play. Rather than human survivors, up to eight players (2-8) take the role of Smiling Critters, pint-sized rejected Playtime Co. creations who scramble through classrooms, warehouses, testing labs, and the dark corridors between them. A mysterious Voice sends each team in to collect scattered parts and resources and bring them back in one piece, with proximity voice chat keeping squads close as the lights get darker.

Every run doubles as a scavenger hunt and an escape attempt. The factory’s other rejected creations stalk the halls hunting for prey, so players crawl, jump, and climb through every nook of the environment, using tools, hiding spots, distractions, and alternate routes to outmaneuver what lurks in the shadows. The layout itself is hostile: the Voice appears to be altering the factory, generating new environments with each run so no two excursions unfold the same way.

Rewards and progression are tracked through the Perm-A-Lounge computer, which is also where the game promises to spill further company secrets over time. The Early Access edition launches with the full eight-character roster, one starter zone, and a core enemy lineup of foes.

Mob Entertainment says it is targeting roughly one year in Early Access, with the timeline deliberately shaped by community feedback gathered through the studio’s dedicated Discord channels and an in-game bug reporting tool. The finished 1.0 release is planned to add substantially more content, balance, story, and hardware support, and the developers have confirmed the price will rise once it does.

That makes this the cheapest time to take the plunge. The game carries a $9.99 USD price on Steam, currently discounted to $8.99 USD under an introductory offer that runs until November 4. Escape From Playtime is available now on Steam, and the original launch announcement can be read on the official Poppy Playtime site.
