S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Is Getting a Free Multiplayer Mode That Won’t Be Like Counter-Strike

After shipping the Cost of Hope expansion and a sweeping 2.0 engine update just last week, GSC Game World is already looking ahead. At Gamescom 2026, the studio confirmed that a free multiplayer mode for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is in active development — and it won’t follow the familiar round-based formula most shooters rely on.

“We believe that we are not doing something that everyone would do,” GSC CEO Ievgen Grygorovych told reporters at the event. “We are not trying to copy other mechanics and we are doing something that our players, who’ve been playing for 2,000 hours in our game, would like.” He added that the mode won’t be “session-based like Counter-Strike,” hinting at something more persistent and open-ended that stays true to the Zone’s survival-focused identity.

Head of creative Mariia Grygorovych acknowledged that multiplayer has never been the main draw for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. fans. “Not a lot of our players really even wait for multiplayer, because we’re mostly a single player game and company,” she said. “So we just experiment with what we can do in multiplayer.” She cautioned that different segments of the community will have wildly different expectations, so the studio is treading carefully rather than rushing to check a box.

The multiplayer announcement came alongside news of a second paid DLC. Ievgen described it as featuring “a different kind of storytelling and experience” from Cost of Hope, promising something that will catch players off guard — in a good way. Both projects are described as the studio’s “two biggest next steps,” though neither has a firm release window yet.

For Steam players, the free multiplayer addition is particularly noteworthy. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has been one of the platform’s most-discussed releases since its late-2024 launch, and the 2.0 update brought significant performance and visual improvements. A multiplayer mode that breaks from the standard template could give the game a second wind without fragmenting its dedicated single-player base.

GSC expects to share more details about the multiplayer mode soon. In the meantime, the Cost of Hope expansion and Update 2.0 are live on Steam for anyone who wants to explore the Zone’s latest content.

Illustrated portrait of Dan Kowalski

Dan Kowalski reviews games by listening to what they do before believing what they promise. He cares about responsive combat, purposeful sound design, satisfying movement, and whether a game respects the player’s time. Dan will forgive technical roughness when the underlying experience is exceptional. He will forgive almost anything for a brilliant combat system—but never a tutorial that refuses to stop talking.
