The frozen apocalypse has its launch date. SpaceRocket Games and Toplitz Productions have scheduled Permafrost to enter PC Early Access on October 9, 2026, with the story-driven survival sandbox opening its gates on Steam, GOG.com and EGS on that day.
The date is a deliberate one. Toplitz Productions announced the release date for the frozen apocalypse, explaining that the game had been pushed from its previously projected August 21, 2026 slot so the team could give the game the extra finetuning it needed. “To satisfy the rightfully high expectations that the gamers, the community and not least ourselves have, we decided to give the development team a little more time to finetune the game from performance to content,” said Sebastian Fleer, COO of Toplitz Productions, adding that “quality is key” and that the fight for survival should be a memorable experience from start to finish.
What players will find on October 9 is a story-driven open-world survival sandbox set in a frozen post-apocalyptic world. On the Permafrost Steam page, the studio describes a near-Future Earth locked in endless winter after a series of catastrophes that culminated in the shattering of the moon. Players take the role of a “Rook”, an engineer with the skills to rebuild but little wilderness experience, drawn into the frozen world by a radio signal from a long-lost friend.
The cold itself is the central mechanic: frostbite, storms and creeping chill shape every journey, turning preparation, shelter and timing into matters of survival. Progress is exploration-gated rather than grind-driven, with abandoned shelters to restore, broken machines to repair and fragile technology to reclaim as players push deeper into a world where city ruins fade into wilderness. A loyal dog companion, rescued from the ruins, scouts ahead, warns of danger and carries supplies.
On the multiplayer side, the Steam version supports solo play and online cooperative play for as many as four players, letting friends build shelter networks together and divide responsibilities. According to the developers, most planned core features are already implemented, with various biomes, hundreds of items, building blueprints and crafting recipes in place, alongside the starting point of the narrative with plenty of side quests. The Early Access period is planned to last at least 12 months, during which more biomes, quests, mechanics, quality of life features and technical optimization are planned.
Permafrost arrives on Steam on October 9, 2026, and players can still add it to their wishlist to be notified when it unlocks.
