Onimusha: Way of the Sword Launches Today on Steam After Release Date Bump

Capcom’s beloved swordplay action franchise returns to PC today as Onimusha: Way of the Sword officially launches on Steam. The game, which was originally slated for September 25, was moved up three weeks following an overwhelmingly positive demo reception earlier this summer.

Way of the Sword marks the first brand-new Onimusha entry in over two decades, putting players in the role of legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. Set in an alternate Edo-era Kyoto warped by supernatural forces known as Malice, the game blends the series’ signature sword-based combat with a rich narrative driven by a cast of distinct characters. Capcom has described the setting as a Japanese-inspired dark fantasy world where historical figures confront otherworldly threats.

The franchise has sold over 9.1 million units in lifetime sales since debuting in 2001, making this revival one of Capcom’s most anticipated comeback projects. The publisher has been systematically reactivating dormant intellectual properties in recent years, and Onimusha sits alongside other returning franchises as a cornerstone of that strategy.

On the technical side, Way of the Sword arrives on PC with support for modern hardware and includes Steam achievements. The Steam listing confirms Denuvo anti-tamper protection and multi-language support across 14 languages with full audio and subtitles. Players who purchase the game during its launch window receive an Early Adopter Bonus featuring a Lion Dog charm and Sealed Curse sword appearance for Musashi.

Three editions are available on Steam: the standard release at $69.99 USD, a Deluxe Edition bundling cosmetic items and charms, and a Premium Deluxe Edition that adds additional outfits, haori designs, and a digital mini soundtrack. All DLC content is also sold separately for players who start with the base game.

For Steam players who have been waiting for a fresh take on feudal Japanese action, Way of the Sword delivers exactly that. The early release date means fans can dive into Musashi’s journey today rather than waiting until the end of the month, and the strong demo feedback suggests Capcom has landed on something worth the long wait.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is available now on Steam for $69.99 USD. Check out the official Steam page and Capcom’s press release for more details.
