The story takes place in Japan in the year 4026. Emma, an outcast afflicted by a mysterious blight, travels with Koo, a dog touched by the same corruption. Their journey moves through a country where vegetation erupts across ruined landscapes and powerful creatures control different regions. The pair must defeat those bosses and capture their abilities while pursuing the Beast of Reincarnation.
Combat mixes direct action with command-driven decisions. Emma handles real-time swordplay, while orders issued to Koo introduce abilities that Game Freak describes as turn-based elements.
