Manic Miner Is Coming Back: BBG Entertainment Announces an Authorized Reboot of the 1983 Platforming Classic

Manic Miner, the 1983 ZX Spectrum platformer that helped define home computer gaming, is getting a full modern reboot. Publisher BBG Entertainment has announced that the reimagined version will launch this autumn on Steam, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Windows, and Mac — with a playable build debuting at Gamescom 2026 starting today.

The reboot has been developed with the full authorization of original creator Matthew Smith, a detail that carries real weight. Despite Manic Miner’s enormous cultural footprint, Smith has historically seen little revenue from the many re-releases and clones his game inspired. This new edition is structured so that he participates in the proceeds from every copy sold.

Two Visual Modes, Twenty Levels, One Brutal Difficulty Curve

All 20 original caverns have been rebuilt in two distinct styles. Classic Mode delivers authentic pixel art with the original sound backdrop, plus an optional CRT television filter for anyone craving that genuine 1980s home-computer feel. Modern Mode reimagines every level with parallax scrolling, dynamic lighting, and detailed new backgrounds while preserving the precise collision and timing that made the original so punishing.

Controls have been overhauled for contemporary gamepads and keyboards. BBG Entertainment says the goal was fluid, responsive movement that respects the original’s notoriously high difficulty without the input quirks that were products of 1980s hardware limitations. The classical compositions by Johann Strauss and Edvard Grieg that featured in the 1983 release have been rearranged in a contemporary style, and global online leaderboards let players compare completion times worldwide.

A Playable History Lesson

Beyond the game itself, the package includes an extensive interactive archive documenting Manic Miner’s journey from early 1980s concept sketches through its rise to cult status. It features historical graphics, concept art, and behind-the-scenes material — the most comprehensive look at the game’s development ever released publicly.

Gamescom 2026 Hands-On

BBG Entertainment is showcasing a playable version at Gamescom 2026 in the Retro Area of Hall 10.2, running August 26–30 at Koelnmesse in Cologne. The studio will also host daily Manic Miner events at the booth with exclusive merchandise for attendees.

Manic Miner launches this autumn on Steam, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Windows, and Mac. For more information, visit the official Manic Miner website or the Steam store page.
