Larian built Baldur’s Gate 3 to be a tactical masterpiece. Overhead camera. Careful positioning. Pause-and-plan gameplay. And a modder named Relysia just threw all of that out the window — and honestly? It looks incredible.
The True Third-Person Camera mod, now available on Nexus Mods, gives BG3 a proper over-the-shoulder perspective that would feel right at home in any third-person action game. We’re talking dynamic field of view when you sprint, smooth camera transitions when you crouch, and a viewpoint that sticks to your character like a shadow.
I fired it up expecting jank. What I got was something that makes me wonder why Larian didn’t ship this as a toggle option in the first place.
The mod builds on Ersh’s Native Camera Tweaks foundation, but goes significantly further. You get full MCM configuration for camera positioning, FOV adjustments, and crouch offsets. There’s even a “fix stuck camera” button for when you inevitably tweak something too far. And yes, you can flip between the original tactical view and the new over-the-shoulder mode on the fly — perfect for switching between exploration and combat.
Here’s the thing though: this mod wasn’t designed for combat. During spell targeting, jumping, or inspecting objects, the camera temporarily snaps back to the default view. That’s a deliberate choice, and a smart one. BG3’s combat simply doesn’t work without that tactical overhead perspective. You need to see where your party is positioned relative to every enemy, every environmental hazard, every ledge you can push Astarion off of.
Where this mod absolutely shines is exploration. Walking through the streets of Baldur’s Gate in third person transforms the experience. You notice details in the architecture you’d never catch from twenty feet up. The character animations pop. The world feels alive in a completely different way.
For the pickpocket enthusiasts among us — and we all know who you are — the crouch transitions alone are worth the install. Sneaking up on NPCs with a camera that actually shows you whether they’re looking your direction? Chef’s kiss.
The mod is available now on Nexus Mods and works with the latest BG3 patch. If you’ve been looking for a reason to revisit Faerûn, this might be it. Just don’t blame me when you spend three hours photographing your character instead of saving the world.
