Someone Built a 3D Version of Stardew Valley and It Even Has VR Support

Stardew Valley has always been a charming 2D pixel-art farming sim — and that’s a big part of its appeal. But one determined modder has decided that Pelican Town deserves a third dimension, and the results are both fascinating and slightly uncanny.

The mod, called The Third Dimension, is the work of a creator known as kittycatcasey. It takes the familiar top-down world of Stardew Valley and maps it into a fully navigable 3D space. You can walk through your farmhouse, chat with your spouse, check the weather report on TV, and harvest crops — all from a perspective that makes you feel like you’re actually standing on your own virtual farm.

The early footage is a trip. It’s recognizably Stardew Valley, but the shift to 3D gives everything an almost surreal quality. Think of it like stepping into a painting you’ve looked at a thousand times — the composition is right, but something about the depth throws you off. Some wall segments are missing and a lot of the characters and objects are flat sprites placed in the 3D world, which creates that slightly unsettling vibe. The creator acknowledges this, calling it a “proof of concept” for now.

But here’s where it gets really interesting: the mod also includes full VR support. That means you can pick up tools with your virtual hands and swing an axe to chop down trees, among other interactions. It’s the kind of hands-on farming experience that VR has been begging for, and seeing it work inside Stardew Valley’s world is genuinely exciting.

kittycatcasey has made it clear that the project will evolve. The long-term plan is to replace all the billboarded sprites with proper, unique 3D models. So that slightly off feeling? It’s temporary. As more assets get rebuilt from scratch, the world should feel increasingly cohesive and natural.

Perhaps the best part? The modder confirmed that no AI tools are being used in the creation of The Third Dimension. Every model, every animation, every line of code is hand-crafted. In an era where AI-generated content is flooding every corner of gaming, there’s something refreshingly old-school about a project this ambitious being built entirely by human hands.

No release date has been announced yet, and the project is clearly still in its early stages. But if you’ve ever wanted to walk around your Stardew Valley farm in full 3D — or better yet, experience it in VR — this is one to keep on your radar.
