Paradox Interactive has officially unveiled Afterworld, a post-apocalyptic survival grand strategy game from the team behind Crusader Kings III and Hearts of Iron IV. Announced at Gamescom 2026, it marks Paradox Development Studio’s first original non-historical setting in over a decade, swapping medieval courts and World War II maps for a procedurally generated wasteland version of North America.
In Afterworld, players lead a tribe of survivors emerging from the ruins of civilization, guiding them through the early struggles of food, water, and fuel scarcity before building toward something larger. The studio describes it as a game that starts intimate and small-scale — keeping a handful of people alive — and gradually expands into the kind of layered grand strategy Paradox fans expect, complete with territorial conquest, political intrigue, and resource management across a continent-spanning map.
What sets Afterworld apart from the studio’s catalog is its dynamic Ideas Tree, a technology system unlocked not through a traditional research queue but through exploration and encounter. Meeting a new tribe might spark the concept of organized religion; crossing a river could teach irrigation. The world itself is procedurally generated each playthrough, ensuring that resources, rival factions, and threats shift with every campaign.
The game also leans heavily into cultural and societal simulation. Players will define their tribe’s customs, laws, and political systems — deciding who earns a voice in leadership, whether to outlaw slavery, and how to handle the conflicting beliefs of neighboring factions. Religious mechanics are particularly ambitious: factions can separate into groups of believers and doubters, and rival mythologies can complicate diplomacy and trade in unexpected ways.
For Steam players, Afterworld represents a significant new entry in the grand strategy genre, backed by one of the most experienced teams in the business. The game is now wishlisting on Steam with a planned release window to be announced. Multiplayer support has been confirmed, including both competitive and cooperative modes.
The announcement follows a leak earlier in the week when Paradox accidentally posted about the game on its own forums ahead of the Gamescom reveal.
