Over The Top: WWI is adding America to the war. Flying Squirrel Entertainment has released a major free update that introduces a fourth playable nation alongside a new paid cosmetic DLC, and the whole package comes with a free Steam weekend so anyone curious about 200-player trench warfare can jump in without spending a dime.
The update brings the United States into the conflict with a full roster of historically inspired uniforms, weapons, and vehicles spread across eight distinct classes. Players can now fight as American troops in the game’s massive 100-vs.-100 battles, joining the existing French, British, and German factions. The developers say the American faction draws from real U.S. Army designs of the era, giving each class its own visual identity on the battlefield.
Alongside the new faction, the update adds a long-requested first-person camera perspective. Over The Top has defaulted to a third-person view since its early access launch, and the option to switch to a traditional first-person shooter angle should feel immediately familiar to players coming from games like Verdun or Tannenberg. The free update also introduces new vehicles and maps, expanding the already sizeable sandbox of destructible terrain and dynamic weather.
The paid DLC, Harlem Hellfighters, is a cosmetic pack priced at $3.99. It celebrates the 369th Infantry Regiment, the legendary African-American unit that served with distinction under French command during World War I and was awarded the Croix de Guerre. The DLC includes dedicated outfits for all eight classes plus four headgear options per class, letting players outfit their soldiers in the regiment’s distinctive uniforms.
To mark the occasion, Over The Top is free to play on Steam through Monday, August 24. Players who decide to keep it can grab it at 40 percent off for $11.48 until August 27. It’s a solid window to experience the game’s chaotic battlefield destruction, where explosions permanently reshape trenches, buildings collapse under artillery fire, and the front line shifts in real time as hundreds of players claw for territory.
Flying Squirrel Entertainment is a four-person indie studio that has been building Over The Top since its early access debut. The game supports custom maps through Steam Workshop and lets players host their own servers, which has helped sustain a community around its unusually large-scale multiplayer. The addition of a fourth faction and a first-person mode gives the game its biggest content push yet, and the free weekend should bring a surge of new players to see whether the trenches hold up under the weight of a fresh influx.
