Beyond The Mist Brings Retro Horror to Steam This Halloween

Horror fans still hunting for the right scare this Halloween finally have a date: Beyond The Mist launches on Steam on October 31, 2026, with a Nintendo Switch version following on November 19, 2026. The announcement comes straight from developer Yliader and publisher RAWRLAB Games, who confirmed the release plan in an official press release this week.

Beyond The Mist casts players as Arthur Webb, an aging lighthouse keeper assigned to keep a remote light burning through the winter. The work is monotonous and demanding, but each night brings stranger and more unsettling dreams, and the cursed lighthouse hides secrets that Webb can only uncover by searching rooms, piecing together clues, and deciding just how far he is willing to push past whatever waits in the dark.

Underneath the retro presentation sits a genuinely branching story. Every choice matters, and players can steer Webb toward one of three different endings across multiple narrative paths. Environmental puzzles built around exploration and observation replace the expected jump scares, while original instrumental tracks composed by Gjoll and an 8-bit soundscape anchor the atmosphere. An enhanced soundtrack and immersive sound effects are available as an option for players who want the Game Boy aesthetic without the audio limitations that came with it, and SGB background support plus a dedicated art and music gallery round out the package.

The game is a major reimagining of Yliader’s Game Boy title The Mist, originally released on itch.io, rebuilt for a wider audience without losing the deliberate, slow-burn chills of the original.

Beyond The Mist will be priced at $5.99 USD on Steam, and RAWRLAB Games is marking the launch with a 20% launch discount during its first week. You can wishlist and follow the game on its Steam store page ahead of the Halloween release, and watch the official trailer to sample the atmosphere before launch day arrives.

Lena Nakamura begins every review with one question: what is this game doing that nobody else would attempt? She covers roguelikes, narrative experiments, striking art direction, and games willing to risk failure in pursuit of something original. Familiar ideas do not bother her, but safe execution does. If a game is beautiful, strange, and slightly impossible to explain, Lena is already interested.
